Consciousness-Raising about Singlism: Taiwan Edition

This past Sunday, the first day of National Singles Week 2012, was such a fun day for me. A journalist from Taiwan who had read the Chinese translation of Singled Out asked if he could come to Summerland to interview me for his series on various forms of discrimination. He was from the United Daily News, the newspaper with the largest readership in the Taiwan area.

To Ann Romney, All Women Are Mothers and the Children of Single Dads Feel Weird

Speaking to the Republican National Convention last night, Ann Romney exclaimed that she loved women. (Well, not that way.)  I don’t think she realizes, though, that not all women are mothers. Either that or she thinks that the only women who count are the mothers.

“It’s the moms who always have to work a little harder, to make everything right,” she said.

“It’s the moms of this nation,” she added, “single, married, widowed – who really hold this country together.”

‘Singlism’ and ‘Matrimania’ Are Words of the Month

This is a true story: When I was named valedictorian of my Dunmore High School class of 1971, my gift from the high school was a year’s subscription to Reader’s Digest.

Maybe I should have continued to read it. In June of 2012, the magazine chose “singlism” and “matrimania” as their Words of the Month. Check out the box in the lower right-hand side of the image. (Sorry it is not very clear.)

Spinster Superheroes?

First, an off-topic NOTE: My apologies for not posting here as regularly as I would like to. Apologies, too, to the people who asked me about guest posting and are still waiting for me to respond or follow through. I’m behind for good reasons. I’ve been traveling, doing interviews, and working on a proposal for my new project on the creative ways that people are living other than in detached nuclear family households. (You can tell me about yours here.) Meanwhile, I have promised at least nine posts a month to PsychCentral for my “Single at Heart” blog, and I never want to let my Living Single blog go unattended for long. So “All Things Single (and More)” has tended to be the neglected child.
